Exquisitely fragrant, festively glowing, with Christmas music and culinary goodies – the anticipation of Christmas grows on a stroll through the atmospheric Christmas market. The three largest Christmas markets in Hanover are located in the Old Town, at the main train station and a little bit away from the city centre in the Lister Meile pedestrian zone.
Christmas market in the Old Town
26th November to 22nd December 2012
The Old Town Hall creates an especially festive backdrop for the Christmas market in the Old Town, with the adjacent Market Church, a showpiece of North German Gothic brick architecture, as well as the historical timber-framed houses. In front of this picturesque backdrop, 170 festively decorated stalls offer everything that the pre-Christmas period has to offer. Warm up with a mug of mulled wine, look over the shoulders of the craftspeople as they work or marvel at the array of gifts on offer.
Finnish Christmas Village, Ballhofplatz
The Finnish Christmas Village, where you can come across a real lavvu tent, is around 500 metres away from the Old Town Hall. Here you can experience the northern culture up close, enjoy Finnish specialities such as reindeer sausages and of course, try the Finnish Glögi mulled wine.
Historical Christmas Village
The Historical Christmas Village is in the direct vicinity of the Finnish Christmas Village, and presents mediaeval town life in all its tranquillity. In the handicrafts' alley demonstrations encourage you to get active in making handicrafts yourself.
A few steps from the Historical Christmas Village, directly in front of the historical Leibniz-Haus, is a small pine forest which is an enticing place to have a cosy mulled wine. In the middle of the forest is the Oskar-Winter Fountain, which has a "wishing ring" on its wrought iron bars. According to folklore, wishes are fulfilled when the ring is turned.
Christmas market at Ernst-August-Platz (main train station)
On Ernst-August-Platz, directly in front of the main train station, another Christmas market unfolds as an inviting place where visitors can also flee from the busy hustle and bustle of the city centre and experience the Christmas atmosphere.
Lister Meile Christmas Market
The Christmas market is located a little bit away from the city centre in the Lister Meile pedestrian zone. Children can enjoy the carousel, train rides through the winter forest where dwarves live and the popular Kasperle puppet theatre.
